Precision Engineering / Diamond Turning Facility
The purpose of the Precision Engineering / Diamond Turning Facility is to
provide ultra high precision near net shape optical and optomechanical fabrication
capabilities in support of various NASA programs and projects as well as
working with industry through Space Act Agreements.
The facility currently consists of two ultra high precision diamond turning
machines with face turning capabilities of 2 meters and 0.4 meters, two
high precision CNC machine tools and conventional machine tools. Extensive
metrology support is available.
The Moore M40 diamond turning machine is currently being upgraded to accommodate
cylinders up to 1.6 meters in diameter, which will be the largest cylinder
diamond turning capacity in the world.
Programs
currently being supported include: Constellation X (replicated nickel
X-ray optics), the Next Generation Space Telescope, various work with
industry (through Space Act Agreements), and cooperative efforts with
NASA Centers.
